Jacob Green

Jacob Green
w/
Greg Mullen and
The Cosmic American Band

8:00 PM Doors/ 10:00 PM Show
Free Show
Energetic rhythms and captivating melody , Jacobs Green brews bona fide homegrown music. Blues singer/songwriter with a twist, Jacob Green , becomes “OneManGreenBand ,” stompbox under foot, harmonica upon neck, strumming instruments tirelessly touring the country. Whether Green plays guitar, banjo, dobro, or ukulele, he forms rhythm, percussion, and lead simultaneously transforming into “OneManGreenBand”. Green’s harvests a resonance of the modern day gypsy, awakening original roots and blues folk songs . The once “down-trodden” old-fashioned blues lyrics to positive riffs of change and “be green”. His versatile homegrown, organic, original songs bring a fresh approach to old-school roots and blues folk music.
Green self–records and produces all of his music under Growth Productions , newly releasing his first of trilogy series, Roots Revival. Green produces music of natural acoustic sound, with reverberations of numerous genres, and encourages messages of being kind and conscious of self and the environment. Growing and seeking supporters with a desire to hear original music with a feel good organic sound.
From classic rock to punk, blues to hip hop, rockabilly to country, hippy to backwoods musicians , all have a seed in growing Green’s desire to craft quality music. Green’s passion for music does not go without admiration for singer/songwriters, such as Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Lennon, Todd Snider, and one man band performers, like Xavier Rudd. Music came easily to him early in life. With interest in making rap music, playing violin in middle school orchestra, and playing guitar in high school punk band. In adulthood, he was drawn to acoustic singer/songwriters and raw sound . He began to lead bands, such as “Green n’ the Grit”, a rock n’ blues band, “Infinite Nature”, featuring tones of hip hop and reggae groove, to “River Water Tribe”, a gypsy-grass band with punk and blues influence . Playing in bands or solo, Green continuously writes and records new material from a rambler’s point of view, bringing a newfound narrative of “go green” and respect one another are lively notes from Green’s highway, byway, back road blues.

The band’s style has been influenced by conventional indie pop, psychedelic music, vaudeville and music hall on their earlier releases and by afrobeat, funk, krautrock and reggae on their recent releases.

Johnathan Scales Fourchestra

Wednesday May 29th
Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
w/ Monkey Mind
8:00 PM Doors/ 10:00 PM Show
$6.00 at the door
Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is an example of musical sincerity. Weaving together collective and individual influences without compromise, they are as much themselves as they are a unit—a crucial trait of landmark instrumental ensembles. Equally captivating is steel pannist and founder Jonathan Scales’ compositional skill as is his tasteful, avant-garde improvisational approach. Driftwood Magazine says "Scales is to steel pans ….what Béla Fleck is to the banjo—an über innovator." Drummer and percussionist Phill Bronson drives the Fourchestra’s time-shifting, modern grooves with graceful polyrhythmic chops and the listening ability of a true master. (His talent has been praised by Victor Wooten, Oteil Burbridge, Chris Thile, Ellie Mannette, and others.) Bassist Cody Wright, the group’s newest addition, rounds out the ensemble with a groundbreaking hybrid picking style stemming from his background as a highly practiced fusion guitarist. With gut-wrenching grooves and blistering, soulful melodic lines, Wright’s mix of flash and feel adds a unique depth to the Fourchestra. Together, the group explodes onto stages with an indescribable sound that is as much felt as it is heard, and is said to have "a Thelonius Monk-like attitude with a Mozart creativity that works." (Pan on the Net) The group’s self-titled debut collaborative album features unparalleled sonic density and envelope-pushing compositions. Guest collaborators include Grammy winning masters Victor Wooten and Howard Levy (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones) and is fully orchestrated with horns and strings.

Janka Nabay

Saturday June 8th
Janka Nabay
& The BUBU Gang

8:00 PM Doors/ 10:00 PM Show
$10.00 in advance/ $12.00 day of show

Tickets
Janka Nabay's "bubu" music may sound utterly hip and futuristic to American ears, but its history spans centuries. The original "bubu" is cloaked in mythology: according to Nabay a young "bubu boy" took it from witches 500 years ago and brought it to the public at large, sacrificing his own life in the process. When Islam reached Sierra Leone, bubu became
a part of indigenous processionals during Ramadan; this is the music Nabay learned and perfected as a child. Now, at last, Nabay hits his stride with Brooklyn indie experimenters-turned-acolytes The Bubu Gang (with members of Skeletons, Chairlift, Starring, Saadi, and Highlife) on his first album-length release in the West, En Yay Sah (Luaka Bop). Like many other musicians in Sierra Leone, Nabay got his start performing what he liked: reggae. But while auditioning for a national talent contest, Nabay's performance of bubu music wowed a panel of frustrated judges who were eager to hear something uniquely Sierra Leonean. Nabay's infectious bubu style also quickly won dedicated fans across Sierra Leone, where his cassettes sold in the tens of thousands, blasting from local boom boxes across the country. Singing in Sierra Leone's lingua franca, Krio, as well as his native tribal Temne, English, and Arabic, Nabay considers his work, then and now, a letter to Sierra Leoneans, a call for them to remember the roots of their culture.

Suitcase
8:00 PM Doors/ 10:00 PM Show
Suitcase is a songwriting and performing project out of North Carolina. While piano, bass and percussion form the bones of the group, so much more colors the recordings. Don Jenkins and Joe Tappe have been honing their partnership for years, a partnership aspiring to the synthesis of the great partnerships of the past. With this new project, and the addition of Travis Williams on the bass, suitcas...e continues to define its voice. "Suitcase", a new self titled, self produced EP, is the first of a 3 part story recounting the story of 2 every-men on a mission to save the world- a mission to face the basic challenges of being human. A new follow-up EP "home" is due out in January of 2013.

Though thoroughly rooted in pop music, the project is not pigeon holed in the world of singable pop songs. The project has journeyed into the world of commercial work, movies, and TV. Nothing is off limits.

Others shake their heads in wonder and say "WHY do they do that?" Lots of cheesy 80's? You got it. Do they bring the rock? You betcha. But what about Neil Diamond? After the band went through several name changes in the early stages of its creation, Roadkill Ghost Choir was formed.

While the member’s major influences include Wilco, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, and Fleetwood Mac, there are also undercurrents of Radiohead and Nirvana, lending the band an impish edge with broad appeal.

The Kopecky Family Band

Tuesday June 18th
The Kopecky Family Band
8:00 PM Doors/ 10:00 PM Show

“Family” is a word that encompasses a variety of definitions. With that in mind, let this introduction to Kopecky Family Band be taken with an open mind and with a grain of salt. This family is connected not by blood or by heritage, but by circumstance. No, this is a family bound by the miles on their odometer and by the songs they have crafted over the years. These six young musicians have created a family through their commitment to each other and to their craft. Crack open your dictionary, if you need to.

the Kopecky Family Band – a non-traditional family, at that – is dynamic, and they wield an equally dynamic slew of instruments. Their thoughtful songwriting is supported by a diverse backdrop of sound. And the musical canvas is covered with broad brushstrokes – ranging from clanging tambourines and guitars, booming percussion, intelligent string arrangements, and triumphant horns. These six bandmates – siblings, if you will – swap their musical tools without a second thought, creating an emotive, adventurous, and energetic environment onstage.
